# Footnote > Footnote puts a clear AI label on the BigCommerce product images you choose, and keeps a record of who labelled what, and when. Footnote is a BigCommerce app. It installs onto a BigCommerce store from the BigCommerce App Marketplace and does not run standalone. It is not listed in the marketplace yet; the site says "Coming soon to BigCommerce" until it is. The merchant decides which images get a label. Footnote shows a visible label (a sparkle with "AI-generated", or a wand with "AI-edited") over those images on the storefront, top right by default, and records each decision in an append-only activity log. Footnote suggests images that may use AI from filenames, alt text and, on Pro, image metadata (Content Credentials and IPTC). Suggestions never label an image on their own. A house rule the merchant sets, such as "filename starts with ai-", does. Footnote does not make a store compliant with the EU AI Act and is not legal advice. It does not decide which images the law requires a store to label, and a label does not make a misleading image acceptable. The storefront script sets no cookies, uses no browser storage, sends nothing about shoppers and runs no analytics. It is registered in the Essential consent category so labels show to shoppers who decline cookies. Footnote never edits image files and does not add Content Credentials, watermarks or other metadata. Works on Stencil themes, and on Catalyst storefronts from version 1.4 (beta). Other headless storefronts are not supported. Nothing loads on the storefront until the merchant switches on Show labels in Settings: with labels off, Footnote registers no storefront script. The app, this site and the badge wording presets are in 13 languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian Bokmål, European and Brazilian Portuguese, and Japanese. Each storefront shows the label wording saved for its own language. A product's images can be re-checked from the Footnote panel on its edit page in the BigCommerce control panel, without waiting for the next catalogue check. Support and data requests: footnote@pouchapps.com. Plans: Essentials at $12 a month or $120 a year; Pro at $29 a month or $290 a year, each with a 14-day free trial. Prices are in USD, billed on the BigCommerce invoice. ## Pages - [AI image labels for BigCommerce](https://pouchapps.com/footnote/index.md): Footnote puts a clear AI label on the BigCommerce product images you choose, and keeps a record of who labelled what, and when. - [Do I need to label AI product photos?](https://pouchapps.com/footnote/do-i-need-to-label-ai-product-photos.md): When the EU AI Act requires a label on AI product images, what the UK rules say, and what a label does not fix. Plain English, with sources. - An explainer for online stores, checked against primary sources on 20 October 2026. General information, not legal advice. - EU: since 2 August 2026, Article 50(4) of the AI Act requires businesses that use AI to make or change realistic images that could pass as real (deepfakes) to disclose it visibly. The Commission Guidelines of 20 July 2026 give product examples: AI images that misrepresent a product, and realistic AI people, need a label; a real product on an AI background usually does not. - UK: no AI labelling law. The DMCC Act 2024 and the CAP Code ban misleading images, and a label does not cure a misleading image. - [Pricing](https://pouchapps.com/footnote/pricing.md): Essentials: $12 a month for 250 labelled images and up to 50,000 product images. Pro: $29 for unlimited labels on every storefront. 14-day free trial. - Two tiers, each monthly or annual. Annual is 10 times the monthly price, so 2 months free. - Essentials: up to 250 labelled images and up to 50,000 product images in the catalogue, default storefront only. Pro: unlimited labelled images, any catalogue size, every storefront, carousel and content images, metadata scan, evidence pack. - The badge designer has wording presets in 13 languages on both plans. - A store with more than 50,000 product images cannot choose Essentials. A store on Essentials that grows past it gets 30 days, then its scheduled catalogue checks run once a day until it upgrades. Product edits, the "Check my catalogue now" button and live labels are unaffected. - One 14-day free trial per store, started by choosing a plan on the app's Billing page. Free on BigCommerce sandbox stores, which get every Pro feature. Billing runs through the BigCommerce invoice in US dollars; there is no separate card. - Cancel any time on the Billing page: the plan runs to the end of the paid period, but cancelling during the trial ends access at once. If a subscription ends, labels keep showing for 7 days and then stop. - [Support](https://pouchapps.com/footnote/support.md): Email footnote@pouchapps.com for help with Footnote. Includes a checklist for when a label does not show on your storefront. - Support, bug reports and data requests all go to footnote@pouchapps.com. - A missing label is usually one of: labels not switched on in Settings, the page type switched off on the Badge tab, a storefront outside the plan, an unsupported headless storefront, Catalyst caching (up to an hour), the script consent category changed from Essential, or an image not hosted on the BigCommerce CDN. - [Use Footnote on a Catalyst storefront](https://pouchapps.com/footnote/catalyst.md): Set up Footnote labels on a Catalyst storefront: the versions that work, what your developer needs to keep, and what to check when a label is missing. - Footnote labels work on Catalyst (the BigCommerce Next.js storefront) from core version 1.4. Catalyst support is in beta; Stencil is fully supported. - Catalyst needs the stock ConsentManager in app/[locale]/layout.tsx. The Footnote script is Essential, so shoppers who decline cookies still see labels. - Catalyst caches Script Manager scripts for up to an hour (DEFAULT_REVALIDATE_TARGET, 3600 seconds). A redeploy makes changes show straight away. - A storefront where Footnote runs has data-footnote="1" on its html element. - [Privacy](https://pouchapps.com/footnote/privacy.md): What Footnote stores about your store and your team, why, and for how long. It stores nothing about your shoppers and sets no cookies. - Footnote stores no shopper data. The storefront script sets no cookies, uses no browser storage, sends no analytics and makes one request, for a public file listing the store labels. - Uninstalling deletes the store record and everything linked to it, including decisions and the activity log. - Sub-processors: Cloudflare (hosting, database, email) and BigCommerce (the platform and billing). - [Terms](https://pouchapps.com/footnote/terms.md): The terms for using Footnote: what it does and does not do, who decides what gets labelled, billing, liability and how either side ends it. - Footnote is not legal advice. The merchant decides which images to label and is responsible for their images being accurate. - Governed by Scots law. Liability is limited to the fees paid in the 12 months before a claim. ## Other languages Every page is translated.
